Tips #1: MAKING AN APPROPRIATE MATCH
The number one key to utilizing Assistive Technology is making the appropriate match to the student. Remember that Assistive Technology is not just an item, device or stand along strategy. Assistive Technology in our minds is an ever-changing dynamic system providing independent access to the curriculum (in school settings) and improving performance of that student. To make an appropriate match to the student there needs to be an assistive technology assessment that identifies the skill sets of the student, the needs of the student; the task the student is being asked to perform; the environment the AT will be used in and the technology characteristics itself. HOWEVER...all of these factors (Student, Environment, Task and Technology) are impacted by changes with time.
